Why isn't your video classified as a YouTube Short?

By Jeff··4 min read

If a video is not classified as a YouTube Short, check its exported duration and aspect ratio, then the upload date and channel type against YouTube's current guidance. BestPost can prepare the publishing workflow, but YouTube determines classification. A vertical picture inside a widescreen file and a Short with few views are different diagnostic cases.

A clip looks vertical in the editor, but the uploaded video does not appear as the Short you expected. The first useful evidence is the exported file itself.

Start by separating classification from distribution. A video can be classified as a Short without receiving the feed exposure you hoped for. Low views alone do not identify a format error.

Check the current classification rules

YouTube's three-minute Shorts guidance describes square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded from October 15, 2024 for standard channels. It gives December 8, 2025 as the relevant date for official artist channels.

That makes upload history and channel type relevant for older videos. A title edit does not change when the file was originally uploaded.

Use the current rule for the actual channel and file. Do not apply a remembered one-minute rule to every new upload or assume a newer rule reclassifies all older content.

Inspect the complete image dimensions

The subject can be vertical while the file is not. A phone-shaped video placed inside a widescreen canvas still has a widescreen outer frame.

Export exampleShape of the actual file
1080 × 1920Vertical
1080 × 1080Square
1920 × 1080 with side bars around a narrow subjectHorizontal

These are aspect-ratio examples, not a complete list of accepted technical settings.

Check the media information in a player or editor. The timeline canvas and the final export preset are not necessarily identical.

Inspect precise duration

Check duration in the actual export with these steps:

1

Check precise duration

A file browser may round the displayed running time. Near a boundary, inspect a more precise duration in the export or media information.

2

Inspect the tail

Watch for an unintended tail: blank frames, an unused end card or an extra scene after the apparent ending. Correct the actual export if it does not match the intended finished clip.

3

Name the revision

Keep the corrected version clearly named. Otherwise, you may repeat the same upload with the same unintended properties.

A later attempt can then use the version deliberately checked.

Is the video already a Short?

Inspect the platform's actual classification before diagnosing from performance. If the video is a Short, investigate visibility and available analytics rather than assuming another hashtag will fix it.

Record what YouTube shows. A short observation window and a small number of views do not establish a permanent distribution outcome.

Avoid creating several near-identical uploads merely to test a theory. That can complicate your own records and split feedback across versions without answering the original question.

Decide carefully before reuploading

Review these points before reuploading:

  • Replacement decision: If the export is genuinely wrong, a corrected upload may be appropriate. First account for existing links, comments and scheduled work that refer to the earlier version.
  • Support evidence: If the file appears to meet the current criteria but classification remains unexpected, gather the file dimensions, duration, upload date and channel context for a focused support inquiry.
  • Reproducible report: A useful report describes the evidence. “The algorithm dislikes my video” does not identify a reproducible technical condition.

The next action can then follow the specific evidence.

For a separate music restriction, check the Content ID claim details.

Add the check to your batch process

For future series, verify a representative export and keep the chosen settings with the production brief. Recheck when the format, editor or export preset changes.

BestPost's bulk upload and scheduling help organize the publishing work. They do not remove the need to select files that fit the intended format.

Common questions

Will adding a Shorts hashtag force classification?

Do not rely on it. Check the file properties and applicable rules in YouTube's guidance; a hashtag does not replace those conditions.

Why does a vertical-looking video count as widescreen?

The vertical subject may sit inside a horizontal outer frame. Inspect the dimensions of the exported file.

Do low views mean YouTube failed to recognize a Short?

No. Classification and distribution are separate questions. Check the actual format designation first.

Do the same dates apply to every channel?

YouTube's guidance distinguishes standard channels and official artist channels. Review the rule relevant to your upload.
