How to schedule Instagram Reels: the app, your desktop and a scheduler

By Jeff··6 min read

To schedule a Reel in the Instagram app, tap More options, turn on Schedule this reel and pick a date and time. You need a public account, and without a subscription you can plan up to 30 days ahead and 25 posts a day. For many Reels from your computer or across several platforms, use a scheduler like BestPost.

For a long time, scheduling a Reel inside Instagram required a creator or business account. A lot of guides still say so. Instagram's current help article on scheduling only asks for a public account, which means most people can now plan Reels without any extra tool.

This guide covers the steps in the app, the limits you will run into, where scheduled Reels live afterwards, and the point at which a scheduler starts to pay off.

The short version

  • Scheduling sits under More options while you create a Reel.
  • You need a public account. Without a subscription you get 30 days ahead and 25 posts per day.
  • Collaborative posts, product tags, sponsored posts and fundraisers cannot be scheduled.

How do you schedule a Reel in the Instagram app?

These steps follow Instagram's help center as of October 2026. Menu names can shift slightly between app versions, but the route stays the same.

1

Start the Reel

Tap Create in the top left, or swipe right anywhere in Feed, then tap Reel. Pick your video and tap Next.

2

Write the caption

Add your caption, hashtags and any effects. You can still edit the text after scheduling.

3

Pick the time

Tap More options, turn on Schedule this reel and choose a date and time. Instagram lists times when your followers are usually active.

4

Confirm it

Tap Done, then Back, then Schedule. The Reel is only scheduled once you tap that last button.

Open Scheduled content afterwards and check that the Reel is there. It takes a few seconds and saves you from finding an empty grid the next morning.

Reels from your laptop, not your phone

Your finished videos already sit on your computer. BestPost schedules them from there, no phone in the loop.

  • Runs in the browser, on your computer and on your phone
  • Publishes from the server, your browser can stay closed
  • Your password stays with you, you connect each account once

What are the limits of in-app scheduling?

Instagram is clear about what the built-in scheduler can and cannot do:

QuestionWhat Instagram's help says
Which account?A public account
How far ahead?Up to 30 days, up to a year with a Meta One subscription
How many per day?Up to 25 scheduled posts
What can you schedule?Reels, photos and carousels
What can't you schedule?Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts, fundraisers

The one-year window comes from Meta's help page on Meta One. It covers the Advanced, Expert and Max plans and is not available for teen accounts. Scheduled Reels also keep the privacy and audience settings you had when you scheduled them.

If you read about a 75-day window or a professional account requirement elsewhere, that was accurate at one point. It no longer matches the help center.

Where do scheduled Reels show up?

There are two ways in:

  1. 1Go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right and, below Your insights and tools, tap Scheduled content.
  2. 2Start a new post or Reel and tap Scheduled.

Tap Options next to any item to Delete, Edit post, Reschedule or Share now. If a Reel you scheduled is missing from that list, the guide to finding and editing scheduled Reels walks through the usual causes.

Can you schedule Reels on desktop?

You can upload and share Reels from a computer. Instagram's scheduling help, however, only describes the feature in the Instagram app, and its computer version says the same.

On desktop you have two options. Meta Business Suite is Meta's tool for businesses to schedule posts, stories and Reels for Facebook and Instagram. The other option is a scheduler that takes your videos straight from the folder they were exported to.

When is the app enough, and when is it not?

The app is fine if you post a Reel now and then. A scheduler is worth a look once one of these sounds familiar:

  • You edit on a computer and keep sending files to your phone just to post them.
  • You batch a week or a month of videos at once.
  • The same clip should also go to TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or X.
  • You want to plan more than 30 days out without paying Meta for it.

Instagram app

  • One Reel at a time on your phone
  • 30 days ahead without a subscription
  • Instagram only
  • Every caption typed by hand

BestPost

What does BestPost need from your Instagram account?

BestPost publishes through Instagram's official API, and the API only accepts creator and business accounts. A personal public account is enough for scheduling in the app, but not for BestPost. Switching to a creator account happens in your Instagram settings and costs nothing.

BestPost does not add music from Instagram's library, product tags or collaborators. If a Reel needs one of those, post that one Reel in the app and schedule the rest with BestPost.

Why won't Instagram let you schedule a Reel?

When the toggle is missing or the time will not save, it usually comes down to one of these:

  • The account is private. Scheduling requires a public account.
  • The date is more than 30 days away.
  • The Reel contains something that cannot be scheduled, such as a product tag or a collaborator.
  • You already have 25 posts scheduled for that day.

If none of that fits, the step-by-step check in can't schedule Instagram Reels narrows it down.

Common questions

Can you schedule Reels on Instagram?

Yes. While creating a Reel in the Instagram app, tap More options, turn on Schedule this reel and pick a date and time. You need a public account.

How far in advance can you schedule an Instagram Reel?

Up to 30 days without a subscription, and up to a year on certain Meta One plans. Older guides mention 75 days, which no longer applies.

Do you need a business account to schedule Reels?

Not for the Instagram app, where a public account is enough. Schedulers that publish through the official API need a creator or business account.

Where do I find my scheduled Reels?

On your profile, tap Menu, then Scheduled content below Your insights and tools. From there you can edit, reschedule, share now or delete each Reel.

Can I schedule Instagram Reels from my computer?

Yes, with Meta Business Suite or a scheduler like BestPost. Instagram's own scheduling feature is described for the app only.
